Paris. The city of light, love and the most exquisite food. The home to many a persons bucket list such as; watching The French Open live, standing at the top of the Eiffel Tower, seeing the Mona Lisa Smile up close and personal in The Louvre and of course, sitting front row at Paris Fashion Week. I’ve been blessed in my life to be able to say that I’ve ticked a few things off that list already, but none so amazing as going to Paris Fashion Week! Paris is also home to the venerable fashion house Balmain, which is fitting considering Balmain is the only name on everyone’s lips at the end of this year’s Fall Fashion Week. Over the past few years, Paris-based haute couture house Balmain has become a household name with high-profile celebrity clients and an image overhaul to match. It is all down to one man, the man who has put Balmain back on the map – Olivier Rousteing.
In the pantheon of hot, gay, photogenic fashion designers Olivier Rousteing reigns supreme. At the age of 28, the creative director of Balmain has cheekbones like geometry and perfect skin, basically he’s the envy of everyone who’s anyone in
Paris the world! However his rise to fame certainly did not happen overnight nor did Balmain’s return to the top of the fashion pyramid come without a price. High profile clients/friends such as the Kardashians, the Jenner’s and Rihanna, to name a few, have helped make Olivier Rousteing a household name in fashion and in celebdom. However Rousteing is so much more than just a high profile status and a pretty face. Since Olivier Rousteing took over Balmain in 2011, the brand has doubled its profits every year, proving that his mantra “Balmain should work for any woman, regardless of her body, shape or age” is starting to stick.
The current Balmain is known for its embellished prints, chunky belts, rich colours and sharp shoulder pad. This year’s Winter/Fall collection stayed true to this, focusing on an hourglass silhouette, showing padded skirts and cinched waists on a bevy of the world’s most famous models. It definitely helps having Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner and numerous other Victoria’s Secret Angel’s strutting their stuff and showing off your designs. Another feather to add to Olivier’s hat is the emphasis that he places on casting a diverse selection of model’s.Since the beginning of his tenure at Balmain, Olivier Rousteing has made it clear that filling his lineups with models from an array of backgrounds isn’t just a trend that he’s looking to follow—it’s a priority. Rousteing has gone on record regarding the importance of representation in fashion. The runway itself was picturesque, including an electric atmosphere and star studded front row (going back to that list of Paris musts).
I would just like to publicly put it out there and say that while 2015 was the rise of Balmain, I predict that 2016 will be the Balmain take over! It’s so inspiring to see a designer bringing such fresh fashion forward looks to the world, as well as bringing back some lush 90s fashion. Who doesn’t love a good shoulder pad? Balmain Balmain Balmain… you have captured our attention.
